Frequently Asked Questions

Coverage

Does this cover other states? No. The App covers the California Notary Public examination only. Notary law is state law, and California's rules on identification, journals, seals, and certificates differ substantially from other states. Roughly 29 states require a notary examination at all; if you are commissioning outside California, this App will not prepare you for it.

Question bank scope? 360 questions in total — 225 practice questions plus a 135-question mock pool that builds weighted 45-question sittings. Four parts: commission and qualifications; identification and the journal; notarial acts; and conduct, discipline and special situations.

Where do the questions come from? Every question is written from the Notary Public Handbook published by the California Secretary of State, which is itself the official source of notary law for the state and the material the examination is based on. Each question carries a verbatim excerpt of the provision it tests, and every one of those excerpts was checked back against the Handbook text.

Are these "real exam" questions? No. The examination is proctored and its items are not published. All 360 questions are original content authored in our own words from the public Handbook.

The Exam

Format? 45 multiple-choice questions in 60 minutes, administered by CPS HR Consulting for the Secretary of State. A scaled score of 70 is required to pass.

How often is it offered? Monthly in major California cities, and often more than once a month.

Do I need to retake it to renew? Yes. A commission runs four years, and reappointment requires passing the examination again — the App is as useful for renewal as for a first commission.

Is the course required? A six-hour approved course of study is required before appointment, and a three-hour refresher is available to current commission holders who apply before their commission expires. The course is a separate requirement from the examination; this App is a study aid for the examination, not an approved education course.

What happens when the Handbook is revised? The Secretary of State issues a new edition periodically. When one is published we re-check every question's cited excerpt against the new text and update the bank.
