Frequently Asked Questions

Coverage

Does this cover other states? No. The App covers the New York Notary Public examination only. Notary law is state law, and New York's rules on identification, certificate forms, electronic notarization and penalties differ substantially from other states. If you are commissioning outside New York, this App will not prepare you for it.

Question bank scope? 320 questions in total — 200 practice questions plus a 120-question mock pool that builds weighted 40-question sittings. Four parts: appointment and qualifications; powers, duties and conduct; notarial acts and documents; and electronic notarization and penalties.

Where do the questions come from? Every question is written from the Notary Public License Law booklet published by the New York Department of State, which reprints the statutes and regulations the examination is based on. Each question carries a verbatim excerpt of the provision it tests, and every one of those excerpts was checked back against the booklet text.

Are these "real exam" questions? No. The examination is proctored and its items are not published. All 320 questions are original content authored in our own words from the public License Law booklet.

The Exam

Format? 40 multiple-choice questions in 60 minutes, administered by the Department of State, Division of Licensing Services. A 70% pass mark applies — 28 correct out of 40.

How often is it offered? Walk-in sittings are scheduled regularly across the state, several times a month in the larger centres. The $15 examination fee applies to each examination taken.

Do I need to retake it to renew? No. A commission runs four years, and reappointment is an application rather than another examination. The App is aimed at first-time applicants and at anyone whose commission lapsed long enough that the qualifying requirements are no longer waived.

Is a course required? No. New York requires no approved course of study — the examination, the application, the oath of office and the $60 fee are the path. Attorneys admitted in New York, and court clerks appointed after the Civil Service promotional examination in the court clerk series, may be appointed without the examination.
