Taiwan Insurance Exam Dates 2026 — Four Licences

Sitting calendar · eligibility · pass standards · recommended licence order

Key points

  • Taiwan has four insurance salesperson licences: LIFE, PROP, INVL and FX.
  • The pass mark is not a uniform 70. LIFE and PROP professional papers require a combined 140 or more with neither paper below 60. The 70 threshold belongs to the common paper, Financial Market Knowledge & Professional Ethics.
  • PROP and INVL do not accept individual registration — your employer or the agent/broker association must submit for you. LIFE does accept individual registration.
  • INVL requires an existing, actively registered LIFE qualification; FX requires completing the prescribed training course first.

PROP — Property & Casualty Salesperson: 2026 sittings

Per the NLIA 2026 examination prospectus there are 16 sittings across the year. The registration window below is when member companies file with the association, so submit to your own company's coordinator well before it:

LIFE — two routes to sit the exam

  • LIA-ROC written exam: roughly 30 sittings a year across Taipei, Hsinchu, Taichung, Chiayi, Tainan, Kaohsiung, Hualien, Taitung, Yilan, Penghu and Kinmen. Individuals register by post only — walk-in registration is not accepted. Deadlines and dates are published per sitting on the LIA-ROC site.
  • Computer-based exam: run jointly with the Taiwan Academy of Banking and Finance (TABF) since December 2022. The next quarter of sittings is announced and opened for registration at 10:00 on the 20th of November, February, May and August, and individuals register directly with TABF. This is the route to take if you need control over your exam date.

The PROP computer-based route follows the same quarterly announcement schedule.

FX — Foreign-Currency Non-Investment-Linked: 2026 sittings

Administered by LIA-ROC, with roughly 12 sittings in 2026. Registration deadlines start in early January and recur every two to three weeks. Each sitting runs for one hour.

Prerequisites: you must be an actively registered life insurance salesperson who has completed the prescribed foreign-currency product training course; missing two or more hours of that course disqualifies you from sitting. Individual registration is not available — apply through your employing institution. Marking is completed and reported to the registering institution within seven working days.

Eligibility and how to register

  • LIFE: an adult R.O.C. national (or holder of qualifying residency), with senior-high/vocational education or equivalent, and free of the disqualifications listed in the Salesperson Management Regulations. Register individually by post for the written exam, or directly with TABF for the computer-based exam.
  • PROP: same education and eligibility conditions, but NLIA does not accept individual registration — you must go through your employing non-life insurer, or the insurance agent / insurance broker association.
  • INVL: you must already hold the LIFE qualification and be actively registered as of the registration deadline. A second group exists: candidates who also hold one of the securities salesperson, senior securities salesperson, securities investment analyst, or SITE/SICE salesperson qualifications are exempt from the second session (holding only the SITE/SICE regulations single-paper pass does not qualify). All registration is screened and filed by the employer.
  • FX: actively registered life insurance salesperson who has completed the prescribed training, registering through their institution.

Exam format and pass standards

LicencePapers and questionsPass standardAdministered by
LIFE Professional papers: Insurance Practice 50 questions (2 marks each, 60 min) + Insurance Regulations 100 questions (1 mark each, 80 min). Single-paper entry not permitted. Combined 140 or more, with neither paper below 60 LIA-ROC
PROP Professional papers: P&C Practice 100 questions (1 mark each, 80 min) + P&C Regulations 50 questions (2 marks each, 50 min). Single-paper entry not permitted. Combined 140 or more, with neither paper below 60 NLIA
INVL Session 1: 50 questions (50 min). Session 2: 100 questions (100 min, includes computation). All four-option single answer. Group 1: combined 140 with neither session below 60. Group 2 (session 2 exempt): 70 TII
FX 50 single-answer MCQs, 60 minutes 70 or above LIA-ROC
Common paper
Financial Market Knowledge & Professional Ethics
100 single-answer MCQs (1 mark each, 60 min); may be sat on its own 70 or above, and the result stays valid for 5 years Questions drawn from the SFI bank

The most common misconception: people say "you need 70 to pass the Taiwan insurance exams", but that is the common paper's standard. LIFE and PROP professional papers use a combined 140 threshold with a 60-mark floor on each paper — clearing the total while dropping one paper below 60 is still a fail.

PROP also offers a separate motor insurance track (Motor Practice 100 questions + Motor Regulations 50 questions), which limits solicitation to motor insurance and requires 80 or above on each paper, with no carry-over if only one paper is passed.

Registration fees

  • LIFE / PROP professional papers: NT$600.
  • Common paper (Financial Market Knowledge & Professional Ethics): NT$250.
  • INVL: NT$550 for Group 1 (NT$500 exam fee + NT$50 handling); NT$350 for Group 2.
  • FX: NT$375.

Registering through an agent or broker association may add a handling fee. Confirm the current amount against the prospectus and your employer.

Why are there four licences?

The ultimate regulator of Taiwan insurance salesperson qualifications is the Financial Supervisory Commission (FSC). To keep the examinations close to industry practice, the FSC delegates exam administration to three industry self-regulatory bodies:

  • Life Insurance Association of the R.O.C. (LIA-ROC) administers Life Insurance (LIFE) and Foreign-Currency Non-Investment-Linked Insurance (FX).
  • Non-Life Insurance Association of the R.O.C. (NLIA) administers Property & Casualty Insurance (PROP).
  • Taiwan Insurance Institute (TII) administers Investment-Linked Insurance Products (INVL), because that licence spans both insurance and investment theory.

Each licence is registered, sat and passed independently, and a salesperson must register with the relevant industry association under their employing insurer before practising.

Recommended licence order

For most new salespeople we recommend:

  1. LIFE first — covers the Insurance Act, Insurance Enterprise Act and Salesperson Management Regulations that recur across all four exams. It is also the first licence for most life-insurance new-hire training programmes, and a prerequisite for INVL and FX.
  2. PROP or INVL second — pick PROP if your firm sells general insurance lines, INVL if investment-linked policies are your main product.
  3. FX last (as needed) — required to sell foreign-currency policies; smallest exam, but you must complete the training course and pass it independently.

INVL explicitly requires an active LIFE registration as at the registration deadline, and FX likewise presumes an actively registered life salesperson. Final registration rules are set by your employer and the relevant industry association.

Time investment estimate

  • LIFE: 3 – 5 weeks (broadest scope, mostly statutory text and product fundamentals).
  • PROP: 3 – 4 weeks (similar structure to LIFE, leaning toward general insurance products).
  • INVL: 5 – 8 weeks (computation-heavy; highest difficulty of the four).
  • FX: 1 – 2 weeks (smallest scope, focused on foreign-currency policy clauses and FX rules).

Plan backwards from the tables above: PROP and INVL registration deadlines typically fall three to five weeks before the sitting, and missing one means waiting for the next.

Common pitfalls

  • Assuming a flat 70 pass mark: LIFE and PROP professional papers use a combined 140 threshold with a 60-mark floor per paper. Chasing marks in your stronger paper while neglecting the other is the most common cause of failure.
  • Underestimating INVL computation: the 100-question second session covers time value of money, bond and security valuation, risk and return, portfolio theory, CAPM and performance evaluation — both concept and calculation.
  • Skimming statutory text in LIFE / PROP: the Insurance Act, Insurance Enterprise Act and Salesperson Management Regulations make up a large share of marks.
  • Ignoring sales-conduct notices: FSC and association sales-conduct rules are a frequent source of questions.
  • Treating FX as filler: smaller exam, but full coverage of FX rules and model clauses is required, and missing two hours of the training course bars you from sitting.

Statutory framework (concept level)

All four exams build on three layers of statute:

  • Insurance Act — governs insurance contracts, parties' rights and obligations, and the basic structure of each insurance line.
  • Insurance Enterprise Act — governs insurer formation, operations, finance and supervision.
  • Insurance Salesperson Management Regulations — governs salesperson registration, solicitation conduct and disciplinary actions.

Specific articles, FSC orders, sales-conduct notices and model policy clauses are updated periodically. This page deliberately omits article numbers — consult the latest official text from each authority.
