About the CMFAS insurance examinations

The Capital Markets and Financial Advisory Services (CMFAS) examinations are the licensing examinations required by the Monetary Authority of Singapore for representatives who advise on or arrange financial products. The insurance modules are administered by the Singapore College of Insurance (SCI) as computer-based, multiple-choice examinations. Which papers you sit depends on the products you will handle.

Two paths, one shared paper

  • Life insurance / financial advisory: RES5 + CM-LIP + HI.
  • General insurance: BCP + PGI + ComGI, plus RES5 where the role also involves financial advisory services.
  • RES5 is the financial advisory paper — the rules, ethics and skills module that every financial adviser representative sits. General insurance agents registered with the GIA Agents' Registration Board do not need it unless the role includes financial advisory services.
  • Exam format, duration, fees and scheduling are set by the SCI and can change. Check the current details on the SCI website before booking.

Where the questions come from

Every question in the app is original and written from the published sources each paper is set on: the SCI study guide for that module, the Financial Advisers Act 2001, the Insurance Act 1966, and the MAS Notices and Guidelines that sit under them — FAA-N06 and FAA-N16 for RES5, MAS 307, 314 and 320 for CM-LIP, among others.

  • Each question carries the provision or study-guide chapter it tests, so the explanation can be checked against the source.
  • Answer keys are re-derived by independent blind review before shipping.
  • The examinations' own items are not public, and none are reproduced here.

The SCI publishes a study guide for each module but no public question bank — the examinations are proctored and their items are not released.
